Portland – Our Home
It is a place of contrasts. It can be grim and forbidding on a cold, gray winter’s day, and with a gale blowing. But on a sparkling day when there is a crispness in the air and the smell of the sea; a strong clear light in a bright sky; white capped waves in the ever present sea all about it, then there is no where else quite like it.
In such a place for nearly 400 years Flanns, Combens and Lowmans have a documented history. They worked the land, quarried stone and fished the sea. Then their world was so much smaller. For many, Portland and no more than a few miles inland was their whole life. The earliest records we researched and found ancestors recorded are written on parchment and in Latin. Today in 2005 this is written on a computer. Consider the history written, and changes that have occurred through the years.
